I can't believe that he was actually encouraging people to return to a city that has no drinking water, no grocery stores, no hospitals, no electricity, etc. For heavens sake, they were still rescuing people from their homes at the same time he was saying that people should return. There are people in parts of Louisiana that are checking the toxicity of the area that are wearing haz-mat suits because of all the bacteria. Also the corp of engineers have said that the levees could fail again if they experience even a catagory 1 hurricane and Rita is supposed to reach a catagory of 3 or 4 before she's done. I would think if a storm of that magnitude just past near N.O. that the storm surge would be enough to damage the levees again.

The BBC was reporting from N.O. today and they had spoken to one family that had driven 12 hours to get back to their home and they were just starting to unpack their belongings when they heard that they needed to leave again. The poor family is exhausted and shouldn't have had to go thru evacuating a second time.

The mayor stopped encouraging people to return this afternoon because of the storm but he should have never told them to return in the first place considering the condition the city is in. And it's not like they just found out today that another hurricane was coming into the gulf.

Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!

BTW, can you imagine how the evacuees in Houston are feeling about the fact that another strong hurricane is headed towards them. I have a feeling that the people in Florida can sympathize with them about now.

Hi JM--
Yep!
I have to admit I was sctatching my head a time or two while listening to the Mayor's directives.... I think he is so diggity-dange exhausted, himself, that his brain is just fried! He needs to step down and take a little nap!
These poor people have been through ENOUGH!

I'm not so sure that it's fatigue. Even before Katrina he and the Governor were aware that the levees were built to withstand only a catagory 3 storm and yet they didn't warn the people strongly enough to get out until it was too late.

I was just listening to the mayor of Houston. He has already started mandatory evacuations for the low lying area's of his city. He went a step futher by asking all the citizens to check up on their neighbors, especially the elderly or disabled and help them get out as well. He has stated that there is no way that his government will be able to provide enough transportation to get everyone out in time. Governor Perry has already asked for the areas likely to be affected to be declared disaster areas so that they can get the help moving as fast as possible after the storm hits.

I hope the state of Texas continues to do a good job of taking care of it's citizens. My little sis lives 90 miles from Houston and is likely to experience some major effects from the storm. It won't be a catagory 4 or 5 by the time it reaches her but it could still potentially be a 2 or 3, which is still pretty bad.

I know you're wondering what this has to do with the N.O. mayor, but I was just thinking that the contrast between what happened in LA verses TX is interesting.

A year later, and he's still an idiot! N.O. will never be the same. I used to live there. I have been there since katrina, and I would never go back....

it just goes to show how most politicians would rather be called an idiot and in bliss than smart and yet incompetint. Never believe anything a politician says, because it can not be taken to the bank!
